No lean season addresses seasonal poverty by offering a migration subsidy of about 20 to participating households covering the cost of a round trip bus fare to nearby urban areas that do not experience the same seasonal fluctuations in job opportunities. For some countries the lean months mean a lack of rainfall a cold season allowing for little harvest or inadequate soil however the community defines it it yields one result poverty who experiences the lean months outreach international is currently working in 7 countries experiencing the lean months. It is called the lean season every year in chad communities that are dependent on rain fed agriculture experience a tough three month period between two harvests when food stocks are depleted experts say that this years lean season could be the worst in six years for chad because it started earlier that is in april instead of june. Evidence actions no lean season is a program we have recommended funding to in the past as part of our incubation grants program and as a top charitydue to research results that did not find an impact of the program in 2017 evidence action is currently conducting further research and is not currently seeking additional funding for the program. A 2571210 grant to rigorously test the effectiveness of no lean season a programme which offers subsidies to low income agricultural workers as an incentive to migrate during the famine season to urban areas where higher wages can be earned
