Swedens riksbank is debating whether to become the first significant central bank to issue a digital currency as it responds to an increasing move away from cash in the scandinavian country . The national bank of sweden sveriges riksbank has earlier today announced its intention to launch ekron a digital currency as the countrys legal tender in the next two years the plans to launch the digital currency was announced by the deputy governor of swedens national bank cecilia skingsleyova. The central bank of sweden is considering issuing a digital currency in response to a drastic decline in the use of cash in the country if the so called e krona is introduced sweden would be the first european country to have central bank backed virtual money just as it was the first to issue paper banknotes more than 300 years ago. Swedish central bank riksbank is exploring the idea of a digital currency to accompany its swedish kroner notes which could ultimately save tourists a trip to the currency exchange desk
